Nephrostomy & Ureteral Stent Placement

When flow of urine out of the kidney is blocked, sometimes it is necessary to place a tube through the back into the kidney. This may be placed in preparation for surgery to remove stones that are blocking the kidney. This tube is known as a nephrostomy tube. A tube may be placed through the kidney into the duct which brings urine to the bladder from the kidney, this is known as a ureteral stent and can help urine drain from the kidney into the bladder

What should I expect?

You will lie on your stomach in a room similar to an operating room with an x-ray camera in the center. You will receive both local anesthesia and sedation for comfort. The radiologist will use ultrasound and x-rays to find the kidney and place a tube in the correct spot.
