Bone Densitometry (Dexa Scan)

A Dual Absorption X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA or bone density) scan uses low dose x-rays to measure bone loss. This test is a non-invasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. It is typically performed on the lower spine and hips; however, the whole body is sometimes scanned. The DEXA scan is most often used to diagnose osteoporosis; a condition that often affects women after menopause but may also be found in men. Osteoporosis is a gradual loss of calcium making the bones thinner, more fragile and likely to break. In preparation for this test, you should not take calcium supplements for up to 48 hours and wear loose fitting clothing, preferably without zippers to the appointment.
