A joint injection is an injection of a long acting local anesthetic agent and/or steroid into a joint under fluoroscopic guidance. Typically a very small amount of contrast is used to confirm location within a joint. The anesthetic agent will provide immediate relief which typically wears off in hours, while the steroid will provide long-lasting relief, but may take several days to achieve maximum effectiveness.
