Vertebroplasty & Kyphoplasty

Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty are procedures used to repair a compression fracture of the spine. Compression fractures can result in severe pain that traditionally has been treated with prolonged bed rest. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are procedures where cement is injected into the broken vertebral body, helping to fix the fracture fragments in place, minimizing a patient’s pain.

This procedure is normally performed in an outpatient setting where patients are able to go home following the procedure. Some physicians treat these patients with narcotic medication or back braces. Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty are minimally invasive procedures that eliminate pain almost immediately. In some cases, the height of the vertebral body (where the compression fracture occurred) may be restored. Typically patients feel better almost immediately.
